When Maria Montessori opened her first Montessori school in the San Lorenzo district of Rome, Italy in 1907, she called it ‘Casa dei Bambini’, or, Children’s House. The term house or home invites a welcoming feeling of belonging before even stepping foot inside. Though most American Montessori programs adopted the term ‘school’ through accreditation, many embody the spirit of a children’s home. This is certainly the case with our Greene Towne community.

The heart of Montessori comes from the preparation of the learning environment. Spaces are carefully crafted to provide children with opportunities to support and guide their learning. The materials are beautifully presented on low shelves accessible and inviting to children. Children are also the ones who end up caring for the environment. They know where to find a broom, a mop, a watering can, dusting supplies, buckets and sponges for scrubbing and take pride in their contributions to the whole. While Ms. Cara and I worked hard to move furniture, replenish work, and design a functioning space, it truly became a home when the children arrived.

Many helping hands contributed to the packing up of our 2121 Arch Street classroom. A variety of feelings were expressed during the weeks and days leading up to the move. Many were excited while some felt hesitant or anxious for things to change. As with any change, a lot can feel unknown. Will my friends be there? Will you still be my teacher? Will the work be there too? It felt good to answer yes to these questions, and the anticipation of Valentine’s Day certainly helped to sweeten the transition.

Once the excitement of the first week in the new space subsided, it gave way to confidence and ownership of a new home. We also welcomed three new members of our community and have grown to a group of 21! With all the newness at hand, the children have jumped right back into exploring, visiting, working, and adjusting to new routines. With the familiarly of the Montessori materials, the snack table, easel, library, circle time, friends and other comforts, the environment feels like a ‘casa’ again.

To new beginnings and the arrival of Spring,

Ms. Anne & Ms. Cara
