Caring for Plants: Our Sunflower Project

At the end of April, the children helped to water pods for our germination station that Ms. Sara donated to our classroom. Once the pods grew taller, the children helped Ms. Sara to push sunflower seeds into them. She turned on the heating pad and the light, and placed the hood on top. Once the seeds sprouted and turned into seedlings, Ms. Sarah removed the hood and we were able to watch them grow taller for about ten days. During this time, the children painted pots using acrylic paint and colors of their choosing.

Once the children’s pots were dry and the seedlings were ready to be transported, the children were able to scoop or pour a bowl of fresh soil into their pots. Using two hands they transferred their seedling into the pot, and then covered it with another bowl of soil. They placed their plant onto the windowsill before cleaning up any spilled dirt and and then washed their hands.

Caring for the Environment

As the children grow stronger and their skills become more refined, they are capable of doing more and are genuinely interested in caring for the environment. Each morning the children come into the classroom and help to set up the environment. They take down the chairs from the tables, help to fold any laundry, wet the sponges, check to see if paper needs to be refilled, etc. The child who brings in groceries on at the beginning of the week will unpack the produce, and sometimes wear food prep gloves to be extra safe while handling food.

The children are also instrumental in setting the tables for Lunch. They will lay down the placemats, carry over the plates or bowls of food, fill up the glasses with water, place a glass of water with each placemat, bring over utensils, and fill up two pitchers of water for each table.

The children have also begun venturing out of our immediate environment to help clean the lobby, specifically with window washing!

Happy Hair Day

Happy Hair Day is all about feeling your best and joyful, whether it’s trying something new or keeping things the same. It is all about what feels like you: fun, comfortable, adventurous, or familiar. Some children and adults chose to change their hair for the day by wearing ponytails and/ or accessories in their hair and others chose to stay consistent.

Baby Chicks and Caterpillars

Mr. Patrick invited us into his room to visit with the baby chicks. Some children chose to pet them and some chose to hold them. The children were so gentle with them. The first chick they met was black and the second one was yellow.

In our classroom we watched caterpillars grow, spin cocoons around themselves, and then pop out as butterflies! The butterflies are enjoying water and clementines peeled by the children. We will release them soon.

Zooming Down The Highway

The cars go ZOOMING down the highway, (place your legs flat in front of you and use your hands as cars to travel down your legs and to your feet)

ZOOMING down the highway, (repeat: travel hands down your legs and to your feet)

ZOOMING down the, ZOOMING down the, (repeat: travel hands down your legs and to your feet)

ZOOMING down the highway! (repeat: travel hands down your legs and to your feet)

UP goes the drawbridge, (pull up your legs so your knees are bent)

UP goes the drawbridge, (pull up your legs so your knees are bent)

UP goes the, UP goes the, (pull up your legs so your knees are bent)

UP goes the drawbridge! (pull up your legs so your knees are bent)

UNDER goes the cargo ship, (scoop your hand under your bent legs)

UNDER goes the cargo ship, (scoop your hand under your bent legs)

UNDER goes the, UNDER goes the, (scoop your hand under your bent legs)

UNDER goes the cargo ship! (scoop your hand under your bent legs)

OVER goes the helicopter, (fly a helicopter over your legs: make fist with one hand and place the other flat on top)

OVER goes the helicopter, (fly a helicopter over your legs)

OVER goes the, OVER goes the, (fly a helicopter over your legs)

OVER goes the helicopter! (fly a helicopter over your legs)

DOWN goes the drawbridge, (push your legs down so they are straight again)

DOWN goes the drawbridge, (push your legs down so they are straight again)

DOWN goes the, DOWN goes the, (push your legs down so they are straight again)

DOWN goes the drawbridge! (push your legs down so they are straight again)

And the cars go… (legs out straight and hands up)

ZOOMING down the highway, (place your legs flat in front of you and use your hands as cars to travel down your legs and to your feet)

ZOOMING down the highway, (repeat: travel hands down your legs and to your feet)

ZOOMING down the, ZOOMING down the, (repeat: travel hands down your legs and to your feet)

ZOOMING down the highway! (repeat: travel hands down your legs and to your feet)

Quiet As Can Be

Mmm, mmm, quiet as can be,

There’s a shark right next to me.

Shh! Shh! It doesn’t make a sound.

I wave to them, a friend I’ve found.

(Repeat with other quiet animals)

Goodbye May!
