Even though the auction isn’t until May, we’ve all been hard at work on the art projects! Here are some updates on the pieces for Mr. Patrick’s and Ms. Brown’s classes, as well as the all Kindergarten project!

Mr. Patrick’s class is working on a piece inspired by Yayoi Kusama’s Flowers (1996). All of the primary classes learned about her and her art in October, and many a polka pumpkin was sent home with the children! Printmaking was the main technique used to bring this piece to life.

The first years worked together to create the background. They made printing plates by sticking triangles made with peel-and-stick foam to cardboard squares. Next, they rolled black ink on top of their plates, then printed them onto a blue background. Some friends used their plates with blue ink to create the table the vase sits on. All of them had so much fun during the printmaking process!

The second years created the stems, leaves, and the vase. They also used printing plates to get all the dots, triangles, and rectangles that make up all of these parts. Each student rolled green ink onto black paper for the plants. For the vase, they used black and yellow ink.

The kindergarteners each were given a flower at random to create. First, they painted their backgrounds the appropriate color. Then they used the same printmaking process to get each dot onto their flowers. They were so excited to add their own special touch to this project!

Ms. Brown’s Class is working on a piece called A Pot of Flowers by Copper Thunderbird. All of the students were introduced to Copper Thunderbird’s colorful works of art in November. Each classroom had a work available on their art shelves that was inspired by his trees. This piece is a wonderful, colorful addition to the auction art line up!

Both the first and second years painted paper in certain colors. When it was dry, the papers were cut into different shapes and layered on top of each other to create all the different flowers in the piece. The second years painted some more paper to create the leaves. They helped put the leaves together like a puzzle. The pot of flowers was starting to come to life!

The kindergarteners worked on creating the birds and the butterflies. They were given a certain color to paint, and once the paint was dry, they also assembled their pieces together. They all were so happy to each have their own bird to work on for this project!

Lastly, all of the kindergarten students from each class collaborated to create a work inspired by Alexander Girard’s set of matchboxes for the restaurant La Fonda del Sol. The students as a whole didn’t learn about his work yet , but they were very excited to see how colorful and fun this project was!

Printmaking was also the main method used to create this piece. Each classroom was assigned a set of three colors to use in addition to white. Then, they chose a face and sun rays to create their own unique, happy sun. This bright, colorful piece is sure to bring some sunshine to any home!
