Hi All,

We are back with a November update, but first would like to thank you for Parent-Teacher Conferences! It was a pleasure having the opportunity to meet with you to discuss how your child has made an impact in our environment. Along with our lovely conversations, we figured it would be nice to have you read about one of the focuses in our environment this past month. Below, you will find information on the Practical Life area. Enjoy!

Practical Life: Care of Self

“It is as if the child has an instinct to form [his/her] own coordination by carrying out actions on objects which surround [him/her] in the external environment. -Dr. Maria Montessori

Practical Life is essential for toddlers in their development. Toddlers are intensely interested in dressing, toileting independence, eating with real utensils, drinking from real glasses, balancing, running, jumping, and helping each other. These activities fall under the three major categories of Practical Life, which are Care of Self, Care of the Environment, and Grace and Courtesy. Through the activities of Practical Life, it will train the memory, logic, concentration, will, and patience of your child. Presented from left to right, Practical Life contains activities that will help your child concentrate, become a contributing member within their environment and society, and develop work habits that will lead to success in later academic work.

Physical self-sufficiency is a central part of the Toddler curriculum, and it’s best known as Care of Self. In our environment, your child gets to experience Baking, Self-Service Snack, and putting on their jacket by themself using the Up and Over method. Currently, we have out clementine peeling, crackers and apple butter with a spreader, and apple cutting with a crinkle cutter for Self-Service Snack. Click to view the spreader and crinkle cutter your child uses.
