Greene Towne Kindergartners have had an exciting month exploring Egypt, Israel, and the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education. Below are some highlights from this month’s Kindergarten “Lunch Around the World” and field trip adventures.
LUNCH AROUND THE WORLD | Egypt and Israel
EGYPT: Nahla Khalek prepared a wonderful menu, which included Karkade (hibiscus iced tea); Koshari (national dish of Egypt/rice, lentils, pasta, tomato sauce, onions and spices), and Native fruits (Mangos/Guava or Prickly pear).
Each child received a hieroglyphic code to write names on papyrus bookmarks, a worksheet with fun facts about Egypt, and a coloring page of Egypt’s flag.

ISRAEL: Sally & Adam Stiefel provided a delicious meal consisting of Lemonana (mint lemonade); Israeli salad (tomato, onion, cucumber, lemon and olive oil); Matzo ball soup; and Rugelach for dessert. Each child was given a bag with supplies to make a bracelet spelling the word Shalom and including charms representing Israel.

Thank you Nahla, Sally and Adam for preparing such a special Lunch Around the World for our Kindergartners!
TRIP TO SCHUYLKILL CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
by Maggie McCaffrey, Primary All Day Montessori Lead Teacher
This trip started off with a school bus ride, which was almost as exciting as the trip itself! Upon arrival, the wonderful staff at the center lead everyone in three activities in small groups to explore what wildlife lives in ponds. We took a hike to a vernal pond where we were introduced to preserved pond animals: a Great Blue Heron, a Mallard, and the shell of a snapping turtle.
The children played a relay game where they sorted animals into those that live in the pond and those that do not. They were also able to take a peek at a permanent pond and look at the larva of dragonflies, mosquitos, glassworms, and midges under a magnifying glass. One group even saw tadpoles! After all the excursions, everyone enjoyed lunch in the center’s auditorium. Before leaving again on the bus, the children had time to explore the exhibitions inside the center.
It was a wonderful trip and a fantastic opportunity to witness the wildlife amongst us – even in the city!
