Summer Camp Session 3: Food

Welcome back Parents,

Here are some highlights from session three of summer camp.

Cool Treats with Chef Jonah

We kicked off our food theme this session with Chef Jonah. He joined the children for a fun and refreshing popsicle-making activity. The children filled their popsicle molds with a colorful assortment of fresh berries, melon, and mango before topping them off with fruit juice or lemonade.

Although they had to wait overnight for their treats to freeze, the excitement was well worth it! The following day, everyone enjoyed cooling off with their delicious homemade popsicles.

The Clay Studio

The primary children completed a project with The Clay Studio inspired by the book Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story by Kevin Noble Maillard.

After reading the story together as a class, they created their own clay versions of fry bread, using sculpting techniques to shape and mold the clay into loaves. This activity helped connect literature, culture, and art in a fun and meaningful way.

They also enjoyed creating clay candy dishes. They began by rolling out a slab of clay and choosing a template for their dish, with shapes including circles, flowers, hearts, and stars. After trimming away the excess clay with a dowel, they carefully pressed the clay into a bowl to create the curved shape of their dish.
Once their dishes were formed, the children painted them with colorful glazes, selecting colors that reflected their creativity while building their pottery skills.

Cooking with Miss Desiree

Miss Desiree stopped by to spend some time cooking with the toddlers, and together they made delicious blueberry lemon muffins.

The children began by placing fresh blueberries into their muffin tins. Next, they took turns mixing the batter, practicing their sharing and teamwork skills. They carefully spooned the batter over the blueberries before the muffins were baked to golden perfection. Once they had cooled, the muffins were drizzled with a light, tangy lemon glaze, making for a sweet and tasty treat that everyone enjoyed!

Soccer and Gymnastics

The children had a wonderful time getting in plenty of gross motor exercise during their sessions with Soccer Shots and National Kids Gym. These activities encouraged them to build strength, coordination, balance, and confidence while having fun with their peers.

During National Kids Gym, the children carefully practiced tumbling skills, worked on balancing exercises, and challenged themselves with movements that promote body awareness, coordination, and flexibility.

With Soccer Shots, the children continued to strengthen the soccer skills they have been practicing throughout the season while also learning some new techniques. During this session, they focused on passing and trapping the ball, learning how to work together with teammates while improving their footwork, control, and coordination.

Toddler Art

Our toddlers combined creativity with a little food-inspired fun as they explored printmaking with fruits and vegetables. Using mushrooms, celery, limes, and apples, they discovered how each item created its own unique shapes, textures, and patterns.

The children chose their own paint colors to stamp with. Using the fruit and veggies as printing tools, they experimented with different designs and compositions. As they worked, the colors naturally blended together, creating beautiful and unexpected effects.

Looking Ahead

As we head into our final weeks together, the children will continue exploring, creating, and discovering through hands-on experiences. The remainder of this camp season will be centered around science and color.

Look who dropped in to have a lunch break with the toddlers!

Best regards,

Cherise
