Awakening The Sense of Taste

Tasting Work
Purpose
* To refine the gustatory sense and introduce gustatory vocabulary: “This tastes bitter!”
* Isolation of the gustatory sense to develop an awareness of the four fundamental tastes: salty, sweet, sour and bitter.

We present foods with tastes that are pronounced in the flavors of salty, sweet, sour, or bitter. At the round table or circle time, we may present a salty cracker, a sweet piece of orange, a sour lemon, or a bitter grapefruit. The children also partake in ingredients included in recipes as we are making them. For example, trying a slice of lime while we make guacamole or eating a sweet or sour apple slice (aka “apple break” as they call it) while we make applesauce.
Veggie Soup

We recently made vegetable soup.
Here is Miss Alexis singing a song which is quite literally the recipe: VEGETABLE STEW SONG
Each of our recipes has a little section in them titled “Toddler as Sous Chef”. In that section you can find ways to include your child in the process if you would like to try the recipe at home.

Communal activities such as this really allow the children to make connections with each other collaborating on setting up and making something for the whole class to share. Our returners take the lead on these projects, sharing and reinforcing their skills. The younger children, seeing their older peers in action, look up to them and get inspired to participate. The veggie soup process calls for potato scrubbing, carrot peeling and chopping and washing mounds of veggies.
Below you can find a few of our go to recipes including vegetable soup.

Fresh Air

The weather has been kind to us for the last few weeks. We have been able to spend more time outside! Your little ones have been enjoying running, bouncing around and navigating the climbing equipment. After waiting a few moments in eager anticipation, they cheer with delight as they watch trains going by.

Warm regards,
Liz, Alexis and Cherise
