Welcome back Parents!

Butterflies were born at Greene Towne! Over the course of about two weeks the children were able to see metamorphosis unfold from start to finish. They watched the caterpillars eat their food, grow larger, and form into chrysalides.

Once the caterpillars reached this point they shared a habitat with Miss Desiree’s classroom’s, reigniting the cozy plan, Chrysalis Edition.

When they emerged as butterflies, both of our classrooms stepped outside together for some fresh air and a butterfly release party where the children bid farewell as the butterflies flew away.

Insect Themed Work

Using the butterflies as inspiration, we brought in some insect themed work which has been peppered throughout the classroom. Some of these options include butterfly wing matching work, real life insect specimens, ladybug math work and a variety of butterfly options in the art area.

Butterfly Books for Toddlers

The children experience the life cycle of the butterfly up close and personal. We also explore this through books we read at circle time. Here are some of our favorites.

Senorita Mariposa by Ben Gundersheimer

This book details the journey of the butterfly during a migration. It is a music book and fun to read written in English and Spanish.

Waiting for Wings by Lois Elhert

Lois Elhert has a host of amazing books for toddlers. Her work is a staple in toddler classrooms. This book in particular emphasizes the butterfly’s life cycle and illustrates the process therein.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

And let’s not forget the ultimate butterfly book for toddlers, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Planting Pea Shoots

You may remember your child bringing home a planting project. At the end of the school year Erika Goldberg visits each toddler classroom to do some planting.

The children have been watering the pea shoots with in our classroom with care and the sprouts are becoming pretty hearty showing no signs of stopping.

A Brief Spotlight on Independence

Here is a rare glimpse of handwashing at the sink. This is an essential task that each child does multiple times of day. Certainly after art, before and after meals and after toileting.
