Sarah Shares: Importance of Routines

As we settle into this school year, despite all the delays and challenges, we have all been able to personally experience what we know to be true for children as part of the Montessori Method—that routines and predictability provide a sense of security and peacefulness. At Greene Towne, we are beginning to access that sense of routine for ourselves.

The past month brought us an unusual number of obstacles and also opportunities for creative problem solving and collaboration towards a goal. We learned that our staff members have untold additional talents not always practiced in their professional roles—Ms. Emily hemmed all of our curtains for the North Building. Ms. Naoki troubleshot ways to get the air conditioning unit working in her classroom. Mr. Patrick served as our safety coordinator for the North Building, as we adapted spaces previously designed for teenagers to work well for our young students. Volunteers from our board and parent community helped get alternative power and AC systems working for the East Campus. And too many more examples to name.

As one colleague put it, schools are made for children, and having children in school is our natural state at Greene Towne. Thank you to our warm and strong community, for everyone’s help in getting our children in school, through the community work party, donating materials and generous funds. We are able to have the comfort and security of our daily routines in the classrooms because of all of you.

With gratitude,

Sarah
