Happy December Primary ADM Families!

Although this month has been shorter than usual, we still wanted to share some updates about Recess and Lunch – two very important times of day!

Adjusting our recess time from the end of our morning work cycle to just before has been quite the joyful experience. Lots of friends are exerting social and physical energies upon their arrival to school – very excited to play, share personal stories, or participate in some community activity like raking up the courtyard. Not only is it fun to have recess first thing, but we are observing longer periods of deep concentration once we do step into the classroom. Thank you all for being flexible in your home schedules to make this change such a success!

Snowflake work has been a huge hit these past few weeks!

As we expected, the children have adjusted well to our new lunch routine. They appreciate the variety of sitting in either the classroom or the lunch room. Each space plays a different audiobook to offer the children something to listen to while they eat. For now, lunch is not a social time and each child sits independently six feet apart to maintain social distance. Although we are eager to return to our lunch routine of sitting together and enjoying our meals as a community – this quiet and concentrated lunch time has some benefits besides keeping each other safe and healthy! We have noticed that the children seem to finish their food and eat more mindfully because they are focused on eating. We have also noticed them enjoying and engaging with the audiobooks. Perhaps when we are able to return to our more communal lunch time, we can offer the children the choice to listen to an audiobook from time to time to add variety and interest.

Whether in the classroom or the lunchroom, lunch is still an important part of our day!

Have a happy, healthy, and restful winter break!

We’ll see you in the new year.
