February 2020-Sistrunk Classroom
Welcome back Parents. The month of February was very exciting. We tried some grapefruit and melon, tested out some new recipes and put the finishing touches on our auction project. We made smoothies. We made smoothies. The children washed berries and peeled and sliced bananas.
As you can see from the photos, some of the fruit did not quite make it to the blender.
We also tried this simple hummus recipe. The process took a mere 5 minutes. It was quick, simple and delicious!
If you would like to give it a try at home, have your child juice a lemon, crush some salt and wash the chickpeas.
Hummus Recipe
2 (15-ounce) cans of chickpeas
1 (16-ounce) jar of tahini (We used Soom brand, Thanks Sophie!)
juice of 1 lemon, about 1/4 cup
1 tablespoon of kosher salt
1-1 1/2 cups of ice water
Drain chickpeas in a colander and rinse well.
Place chickpeas in a food processor or blender.
Add tahini
Add lemon juice
Add salt
Process until mixture looks peanut-buttery, about 1 minute.
Stream in the ice water, a little at a time, with the motor running.
Process just until mixture is smooth, creamy and uniform in color.
Hint: try adding a clove of garlic, a dash of cumin or roasted peppers for a nice twist.
Easy chickpeas-y! Enjoy!

I often talk about the idea of building community in the classroom. This we as teachers strive for from the moment we meet your family. Getting to know each of your children, building trust and fostering positive and fulfilling social relations are the very foundation of community building. We used our classroom community as an inspiration for our auction art project.
We look forward to seeing you all at the auction this May. Stay tuned for details.
All the best,
Alexis, Patty and Cherise
