December in the classroom is short and sweet with a flurry of activity and the anticipation of the holidays around the corner accompanied by a welcome break.

We decorated the classroom with winter themed pin punching work, garlands, and colorful bead stair trees. We sipped hot coco one morning with snack and enjoyed freshly squeezed orange juice as a work out on the shelves.

We read some books about Hanukkah and demonstrated the lighting of the Menorah. The children had fun using dreidels on the playdeck and enjoyed some seasonal treats.

As the weather got colder, our classroom got cozier. Some choose to curl up with a book, while others take on a project with a good friend. Comfort within the classroom and each other was visibly expanding.

Our Kindergarteners had their first official field trip to the Fire Station on Market Street! We walked over with the other Primary K’s as a big group and enjoyed a demonstration of how the Fire fighters get their gear on when they get the call. And then they received a real call! While we did not get a chance to see the inside of a firetruck, it was exciting to wave from the side as they quickly departed the station to do their jobs.

Lastly, it has become a bit of a tradition now to memorize poems each month. It always amazes me how quickly it is remembered to heart. We often come up with our own hand motions and practice reciting it in front of the group. Here is December’s Poem:

December is the month
When friends and families get together
to celebrate the holidays in cold and snowy weather
We say hello to Winter
And wave goodbye to Fall
We light some glowing candles
To spread holiday cheer to all
