Mayor Nutter Reads to the Kindergarten Students

This week the Kindergarten students had a special guest visit them – former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter! He read two books to them: Bug on a Bike by Chris Monroe and Tinyville Town Gets to Work by Brian Biggs. How did Mr. Nutter end up at Greene Towne reading to our Kindergarteners? It all started with the movable alphabet!

Earlier this year a Kindergarten student was looking through the magazine clippings that are kept in the classroom for story telling work. Typically younger children choose a picture and dictate a story to a teacher; older children may use the movable alphabet to construct and write their own story. Dylan choose a picture with several bikers and asked his teacher, “Is this Mayor Nutter?” It was, in fact, Mr. Nutter.  Once Dylan recognized that Mr. Nutter’s helmet was one he had seen at a train station, he declared that he was going to write a story.

We shared Dylan’s story with Sarah Clark Stuart, alum parent and Executive Director of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia. She shared the story with Michael Nutter; after he read it, he was nice enough to reach out and offer to visit and read to the Ks. It was a special treat for us everyone involved!
