Weaving Our Way Through November

In honor of the Indigenous People’s Month, we spent November learning all about indigenous artist Jeffrey Gibson. His colorful works of art are full of patterns and shapes, which are perfect for weaving! Both the kindergarteners and lower elementary students made two different projects inspired by his work.

The kindergarten students learned all about complementary colors and patterns to get their projects started. They each chose a complementary color pair to work with to create their background, and started weaving. They learned the traditional over/under weaving pattern and used this technique for both pieces of their project. Once both their background and heart weavings were complete, they glued them together to finish their Jeffrey Gibson inspired weavings!

The lower elementary class took their weavings a step further. Each student chose their own pattern to weave, and some layered strips of paper to make an even more dynamic pattern. Many of Jeffrey’s pieces include a phrase that’s meaningful to the art. The letters in his work are simplified into basic geometric shapes as well. Each student used his lettering to write their own names and added to their weaving to complete their works of art.
