The tradition of celebrating the Earth at Greene Towne is an incredible 20 years old! Established by parent volunteers in 2003, the gardening program has expanded to include worm composting, keeping kitchen and paper waste from landfills each year. All the children, from Toddler to Kindergarten, have the opportunity to dig for worms, many squealing with delight when they find one.
Many thanks goes out to all of the parents, staff and faculty, and most of all the children for making Earth Week such a wonderful time at Greene Towne. It was exciting to have parent volunteers back on campus during the week! Thank you to Erika Goldberg for leading this week of events and Liv Lee and the GPA for helping to organize the community service at Liberty Lands Park, which was unfortunately canceled due to April showers.
During the week, students engaged in a variety of activities, learning the importance of caring for the natural environment. We welcomed a new growing season by planting, setting up worm composting, and caring for our current gardens. Specifically, the children:
1. Planted mini Lettuce gardens to take home
2. Started seeds in repurposed household trash (all clean) which we’ll nurture here at school and eventually plant on our new roof deck.
3. Searched for worms in our nicely finished compost
4. Refreshed our worms’ home so they may make more nutrient-rich compost from our food scraps.
5. Kindergarten students tended trees in the neighborhood.
Enjoy some photos that give just a taste of the fun that was had all week. Thank you to Juliana Cabal Herrera, Amanda Reath, and Erika Goldberg for sharing photos.
