Greetings Parents,

We explored the continent of Antarctica for week four of camp. The children made some arctic themed art and did some experimenting with ice.

Mad Science

Our friend Electron Evy from Mad Science came to give a workshop called “Smoke and Bubbles”.

Evy introduced dry ice and the three states of matter (solid, liquid and gas). She demonstrated how cold dry ice is by freezing water on a spoon right before our eyes. The group also enjoyed bubbles made of carbon dioxide, soap and water.

Here is a video of the dry ice experiment: MAD SCIENCE DRY ICE VIDEO

Art meets Science

This week’s art project took on a scientific twist. We used ice as a vehicle to apply pigment for a printmaking experiment. The children each had two sheets of paper, treating one sheet with cubes of colored ice and the other sheet with cubes of colored oil. They took a second sheet of paper and placed it directly on top of the first then gently pulled them apart to reveal a colorful print.

Soccer Shots

So far the children have been practicing the following moves:

  • step over: stepping over the ball to change direction of their body
  • control: balancing the ball under one foot
  • tick tocks: tiny kicks to keep the ball close to them as they move about the space.

This week we learned a new move called the pull back. This is another way to change direction. Using the heel of the foot and the toes to roll the ball behind them. They tried this with cones first then practiced this again as they scored goals.

Gentle reminders…

  • Soccer day is Friday each week. Please send your child in wearing sneakers or closed toe shoes each and every Friday. Sandals/open toes shoes are not recommended or ideal for soccer.
  • Please take care not to block the driveways on either side of our entrance.
  • Health checks should be completed each morning before arrival.

Enjoy your weekend!

Best regards,

Cherise
