Recently Greene Towne was featured on the front page of Center City Quarterly, the newsletter of the Center City Resident’s Association. In the article, titled Peace Education: Part of Montessori’s Past, Preparation for a Complex Future, we talked about the importance of the Peace Curriculum in Montessori and how we specifically celebrate peace here at Greene Towne. The International Day of Peace is a wonderful jumping off point to start the school year. The Kindergarten students, under the guidance of Art Teacher Emily Grant, create pinwheels for Pinwheels for Peace and a collaborative art installation with a message of peace to share.
Maria Montessori believed in peace education and believed that children would be the catalyst for change in the world. The Montessori Peace Curriculum teaches conflict-resolution skills, gives children confidence to share their feelings, and teaches empathy to listen to others.
