Toddler:

Help me to do it myself

“The goal of early childhood education should be to activate the child’s own natural desire to learn.” Dr. Maria Montessori Pioneer

Welcome to the Toddler House

Age: 18 months – 3 1/2 years

The Montessori environment for toddlers encourages concentration, independence, self-confidence, and self-motivation in each child.

Circle Time

Circle time in the toddler Montessori classroom is a welcoming and predictable part of the day that helps children feel connected to their community. Through songs, stories, movement, and conversation, toddlers build language, practice social skills like listening and taking turns, and begin to understand what it means to be part of a group. This joyful time supports early communication, cooperation, and a growing sense of belonging.

Lunch

The toddler lunch program at Greene Towne is a key part of the toddler curriculum, offering nutritious meals prepared daily by our in-house chef with care for individual allergies. Mealtime is a valuable learning experience where toddlers are able to help set the table, use real dishes, and clean up, building independence and practical life skills. The classroom staff intentionally uses rich and purposeful language to describe the tastes and textures of the meal, as well as model respectful communication, such as, “More, please” and “Thank you.” These daily routines nurture language development, social interaction, and a growing awareness of how to care for themselves, their environment, and their community. Daily Routine

In a Montessori toddler environment, a consistent daily schedule is a foundational element. Young children thrive on predictability; knowing what to expect each day provides them with a deep sense of security and control. This consistency supports their developing independence, emotional regulation, and confidence. A well-structured routine reduces anxiety, promotes focus, and helps toddlers navigate transitions smoothly.

Montessori Work Cycle

Each morning begins with a warm welcome and smooth transition into the classroom, where toddlers take ownership of their space and begin their day with purpose. A long, uninterrupted work period follows, allowing children to explore hands-on activities that support their development in practical life, language, and motor skills. The toddler guides offer gentle support, nurturing focus and independence. Toileting routines are respectfully integrated throughout the day that encourage autonomy and respond to the needs of each child. After this focused time, children head outdoors for active play—running, climbing, and exploring nature to build physical skills and enjoy social connection. This active play is then followed by a short circle time with songs, stories, and community-building activities. Finally, toddlers enjoy a peaceful, communal lunch where they practice independence, grace, and courtesy rounding out a day full of growth, exploration, and care.
