Summer Camp Session 2: Inner Space

Art

The toddlers made wind chimes. They painted aircrafts, birds and rainbows then embellished them with rhinestones for a sparkly touch.

The primary children began their class by pounding down a slab of clay. They each pressed their clay into a shallow bowl molding it into a small dish. They applied layers of paint and flicked some pastel colors on top of their background to simulate constellations.

Soccer Shots

The toddlers practiced a new move this week called the step-over. They used one foot to step over their ball and turned around to go in the opposite direction. The primary children engaged in a scrimmage game and used big kicks to score goals through cones.

Each session concludes with a soccer cheer with their coach.

Special Guests

We had a visit from local author Iris Kitagawa-Rainey and illustrator Dominic Wolocko. Iris Kitagawa-Rainey is a local author of children’s books and Dominic Wolocko is an author as well as the illustrator of Iris’ books. Their collaborations include Wormy Worm’s World and 134 Mouse House.

Iris and Dominic spent the morning with our primary children reading Wormy Worm’s World and doing an art project. They provided the children with mimeos from the illustrations in the book. The children colored them in and then flipped their papers over to draw a worm of their own. Many delighted in showing their work. Our guests also stopped by our toddler classrooms for circle time. Iris gave us a lively read and Dominic showed the children, in real time, how he drew Marvin the Worm, a character from the book. He left his illustrations behind for the toddlers to color in.

Gentle Reminders

  • Please be sure to label every single piece of clothing, shoes, sunscreen, etc. that your child brings to camp.
  • If feasible, we encourage you to drop off your child before 9am. The earlier the better. Many of our summer activities (soccer, art, water play and special guest shows) begin at 9am sharp. Most children begin their transition to these activities just before 9.
  • Soccer Shots visits every Friday for all students. Please consider closed shoes or sneakers on Fridays. Sandals and shoes with open toes and or backs are not exactly ideal for kicking goals.

Stay cool!
