Greetings Parents,
Welcome to the summer camp blog. I will be sharing four blogs this summer, one at the close of each camp session. During session one we followed the theme of outer space through art, activities and special guest visits. Here are some highlights from our first session of camp.
Art

The toddlers created some suncatchers in the shape of rockets, planets, satellites and more. They also did a fun project with Miss Chris inspired by the fiery sun.
Our friends from The Clay Studio have returned to do a six week residency at Greene Towne. The primary children created some rockets by patting down slabs of clay, using a dowel to trace their rocket shape and add details to the surface of their piece.

Mad Science

Our friends from Mad Science came to do a workshop with our primary children. The children were introduced to dry ice and the three states of matter (solid, liquid and gas).
Here is a little video snippet of an experiment with dry ice: SMOKE AND BUBBLES
Soccer Shots

Soccer Shots will be with us every Friday (and due to next week’s holiday, Thursday, July 3rd).
Your children will be practicing scoring goals, dribbling the ball with their feet and running around the movement space.
A good rule of thumb for soccer would be to send your child to camp wearing sneakers or shoes with closed toes and covered backs. Open toe shoes, flip flops and sandals are not exactly ideal for soccer drills.

The children begin each session by going over the rules.
Rule number 1: Listen to your coach
Rule number 2: Believe in yourself
Rule number 3: Try your best
Here are some of the techniques introduced in this camp session:
Control: holding the ball firmly under one foot
Changing speed: making tiny kicks with the ball to keep it close while moving slowly then quickly.
Big kicks: kicking the ball hard to score a goal
The children also engaged in a scrimmage aiming their ball at a goal placed on opposite sides of the room.
Indoor and Outdoor Recess

We had a few days of intense weather. On days when it is too hot outside we stay safe and cool by following an indoor recess schedule. When outside, the children cooled off on the play roof by splashing around in some water and enjoying cool treats. The children stay hydrated all day with cool water. They also tend to the plants watering them each day they are outside.
Mr. David

Mr. David joined us for a fun filled concert. He performed an outer space themed concert which included a galaxy version of Old McDonald Had a Farm. Hecollaborated with the children on an interactive art piece.
