Lower Elementary visits The Wagner

On Wednesday, February 4, our 1st-3rd graders took a field trip to The Wagner Free Institute of Science – a hidden gem in Philadelphia.

The docent, Tobey, showed a variety of items and shared facts about them. Students had up close access to a wide range of fossils, gems, insects, and so much more. Many of the children noted listening to a shell that sounded like an elephant, touching an alligators mouth and spikey animals, and seeing a brain. Other highlights were seeing a Golden Eagle, dinosaur bones, puffer fish, and snowy owl – a favorite of a third grader who enjoys Harry Potter books.

After the presentation, students went on a Scavenger Hunt and explored the space.

Two students on the field trip were conducting research for projects they are completing in the classroom.

“I am researching a vampire bat in class and asked Teacher Tobey if there was a vampire bat, and she showed me one. It was bigger then I expected.” – First Grader

“I am researching animal defenses in class and the spikey crab showed me that no one goes near it because of its spikes.” – Second Grader
