Winter at Greene Towne has been full of wonderful work and energy. Here are highlights of children staying active during the cold weather with yoga moves and exercise, some outside time, and through classroom learning. In addition, this month marked a few celebrations and Kindergartners have had some fun adventures since the start of the new year.

a perfect complement to their quesadilla lunch.

Black History cards work: students marveled at the multitude of people making history and the many ways they have made the world a better place.
Celebrating 100th Day of School (Willow Tree – Primary)
The Willow Tree Community had a fun time celebrating the 100th Day of School in February. Children brought 100 items in a ziplock bag and practiced speaking to the whole class during show and tell. Every child confidently shared their 100 items, explained who they counted with at home, and described how they reached 100.

Learning the Phases of the Moon (Magnolia Tree – Primary ADM)
The Magnolia Tree Community learned about the moon because there are several holidays in February that relate to the moon-Lunar New Year and Ramadan. Children worked on moon related crafts. There are also several books in the classroom library that explain the relationship between the moon and the holidays as well as research books about the moon.

Kindergarten Adventures
Field Trip – Chinatown
Kindergartners and chaperones had an adventurous time this February exploring Chinatown together.
Children took notice that the History of Chinatown mural was covered by new construction, which opened up thoughtful conversations about development, change, and the importance of honoring art that celebrates a community with deep roots in our city.
Children had a snack of fruit smoothies (mango and strawberry) from the Mayflower Café, while children and parents waited outside. Chaperones helped portion the smoothies into small cups for the children. The first real chance to warm up from the cold came once the children and chaperones entered You & Me Market, where the scavenger hunt was the highlight of the trip.

Lunch Around The World
Poland, Ukraine & Russia (February)
February’s Lunch Around the World brought the Kindergartners together for a shared experience hosted by the Stouffer (Polish) and Pazuniak (Ukrainian/Russian) families. Beautiful posters highlighting Poland, Ukraine and Russia showcased some of the customs for each country. A thoughtfully curated menu was designed representing traditional dishes from each country. After lunch, children decorated nesting dolls and sunflowers.

Ireland & England (January)
In late January, Kindergartners also gathered to learn about England and Ireland, which was hosted by the Shanahan (England) and Lawless (Ireland) families.
Students enjoyed traditional foods from both countries. The English menu included tea sandwiches (cream cheese & cucumber; sunbutter & jam), scones, crisps, and peppermint tea. The Irish menu featured baked potatoes with toppings and carrots.
The Shanahan family shared a special connection to the day by bringing in an old family photograph of their ancestors from England. After lunch, students decorated paper teacups, listened to an Irish story, and learned about Irish culture. The lunch wrapped up with a fun Irish jig.
