Welcome back parents,

As your children build their routines, confidence and independence is steadily emerging. You may have heard some new language such as, “my work’ or “I need some space”. These are phrases we give the children as tools to take ownership of their work. Much of their independence and confidence is achieved with the support of our returning students showing the new children the routine.

We build community and celebrate diversity in the classroom by learning about each other. One way to make connections and learn more about each other is through celebrating special occasions. You will see this happen throughout the school year. We started the month of November off with a Diwali celebration.

One of our favorite books to read this time of year is titled “The Wheels on the Tuk Tuk” by Kabir and Surishtha Sehgal. The is a song book that can be read to the tune of The Wheels on the Bus. It is a fun adventure on a tuk tuk around India and the story ends with a Diwali celebration.

Birthday celebrations!

We introduced the continents in our classroom this month. For our children we normally explore this in three ways: the continent puzzle, boxes and song.
The continent song is a short jingle. Here are the lyrics.

Oh continents, continents, Do you know the continents?

Oh continents, continents all around the world.

There’s Asia and Africa, North America, South America, Australia, Antarctica and Europe too

That’s Asia and Africa, North America, South America, Australia, Antarctica and Europe too

The Asia box contains animals native to the continent including a panda bear, elephant, tiger and cub. There are also some textiles, photos and a Tuk Tuk from Thailand.

We now have a yoga corner in our classroom. In our classroom the children know that we use walking feet when navigating the space. However, they are sometimes in need of more deliberate movement within the space. We have a movement corner in our room. There is a stationary bike and some yoga mats. The yoga mats are accompanied by cards with yoga moves on them. The children have been enjoying practicing poses. This also gives their bodies some rejuvenating stretching.
