Hello Everyone,

Spring is officially here! We have been taking advantage of the warmer weather and have been enjoying lots of time at outside recess running, jumping, climbing, and playing pretend at the parks. Our classroom has also been working on quite a few crafts and seasonal projects much to the children’s excitement. As an extension of our initiative towards more self-love and positive affirmations in our class we have been using these cultural projects as a means to help the children build more confidence in themselves and pride in their identity. This also helps our students recognize and appreciate differences and build positive associations with what makes them unique instead of feeling shame or fear. They’ve also worked collaboratively on a few art pieces, learning the valuable skills of compromise and community building as well. At Greene Towne we strive to ensure that we are preparing our students for their time outside of our doors and beyond. This cultural work encourages the children’s development as global citizens and lends them a perspective on not just their own place in the world but building empathy for other people and places as well.

These crafts also provide an opportunity for mindfulness and gratitude. We shared our “Box of Love” craft during the parent coffee wherein the children decorated their hearts and thought of the people and things they love most in the world. During March the children also worked on a “Lucky Golden Coin” craft blending a mix of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations along with an expression of what they currently feel most lucky and appreciative for. The Kindergartners have collaboratively created many beautiful holiday displays for our classroom door including Lunar New Year and Holi and have worked together on a project where they mixed paint to match their skin tone and expressed what they love most about living in the skin they’re in. Currently as a classroom we are working on completing a moon mobile to celebrate Ramadan and a lantern craft honoring the life and work of Harriet Tubman. Keep an eye out for your child’s Friday Folder to see which cultural crafts they have to bring home that week!
