Parent Ed Workshop: Racial Literacy for Families with Young Children

Diversity Education Workshop: “Racial Literacy for Families with Young Children”
Tuesday 2/13, 6:30-7:30pm (reception to follow, 7:30-8pm)

Please join us for a conversation on Racial Literacy for Families With Young Children, led by Dr. Howard C. Stevenson and Dr. Shawn C.T. Jones, both of the Racial Empowerment Collaborative at the Graduate School of Education, University of Pennsylvania. Numerous studies have shown that children begin to notice racial difference in the first year of life, and that the more frankly and frequently race is discussed by parents, the more likely children are to feel comfortable and confident about their own identities, and to respect and value persons with racial and ethnic backgrounds different from their own. But many of us do not know what to say or how to address race and inequality with our young children. Dr. Stevenson and Dr. Jones will discuss ways that parents can engage our children in honest and age-appropriate conversations.
