Thank you to all the parents who attended our recent “Applying to First Grade” Parent workshop! This panel event gives GT parents a chance to learn about the wide variety of school options available to your children after Greene Towne, and the steps to take to make the process smooth and successful in finding the right match for your child and your family. Erika Goldberg gave an overview of the year-long support process that GT provides for K families as they undertake this important process.
We are grateful to the school representatives and other presenters who shared information about their types of schools and the application and testing process. This year our panel represented 6 Philadelphia-area schools, reflecting the wide variety of options our families have to choose from, and shared information about their types of schools with the parents.
Year after year, the schools listed below and more welcome Greene Towners for their first grade places. Greene Towners who have completed the Kindergarten year are confident, competent, independent, determined, thoughtful, curious, creative, and respectful and they are valued by the area schools for their understanding of learning as a personal process, their sense of agency in building self and community, and the joy of possibility they find in knowing they are capable.
Our panel included:
Andrea Lubrano, Friends’ Central School, represented Friends schools and spoke about Quaker education and riding the bus.
Gwen Shangle, Gladwyne Montessori, explained Montessori for the elementary years, how the curriculum continues, and middle school leadership in a K-6/8 school.
Current Greene Towne and Greenfield Elementary parent, Puja Chokshi, talked about neighborhood public schools and attending a school in your community.
Alison Fritz from The Baldwin School shared the value of single sex education as well as attending school outside of Center City.
Sandy Trezza from St. Peter’s School talked about schools that end with 8th grade, staying in Center City, and smaller school communities.
Jenny Lightman from Perelman Jewish Day School presented the faith-based curriculum option.
Sara Evans addressed the testing process for 1st grade admissions and shared many helpful hints.
